How Does Amazon plan to make money on Amazon Underground?
From what I can find, it sounds like Amazon currently doesn't monetize Underground. My question is, how does it plan to do is in the future? I read somewhere it may be by insert ads into our app in the future? Just want to understand, since something like that can dramatically impact user experience. Thanks, Andrew
When a user launches an Amazon Underground app for the first time, a welcome message in the form of an interstitial ad plays. In subsequent times that a user either launches or resumes the app, paid interstitial ads will also sometimes play. You do not need to do anything to enable these ads. Amazon configures the ads when your app is published to Amazon Underground. We’ve made it possible for customers to get actually free apps by working out a new business model with app and game developers: we’re paying them a certain amount on a per-minute played basis in exchange for them waiving their normal in-app fees. To be clear, we’re the ones picking up those per minute charges—so for customers it’s simply free. And, if customers interact with us more frequently across Amazon, that’s a great outcome.
As a developer, I also wonder this. And are there more permissions required for apps for Amazon Underground than those for common Amazon Appstore? So I think, the amazon underground maybe is not fit to those clean utility apps. Is it right?
I would agree that underground isn't going to be right for a lot of utility apps where they have very little runtime because the compensation is based on runtime. That said, a lot of games would certainly benefit from it as someone may not be willing to pay even $0.99 for a game, but if it's free they may spend a fair amount of time playing it.
I am totally reworking the monetization of my app because underground is perfect for my app where a short usage is 20 minutes and many usages can run multiple hours.
