problem communicating with skill

I am getting nowhere on skill development because I am unable to get my Amazon Echo to reach my skill's endpoint, even in Lambda. I set up the Space Geek sample skill in Lambda in the US East region, with a basic execution IAM role, and enabled the Alexa event source. I set up the skill my developer account. This skill appears in my Echo app's sidebar, but when I try to launch it, I get the "problem communicating with skill" error message. Lambda's logs do not show connection attempts getting through. Before I tried lambda, I was trying to develop my skill as a Python endpoint on hookscript.com. It was getting the same "problem communicating with skill" error, which I assumed was caused by an incompatible SSL certificate. This prompted me to try Lambda, but this problem is still there. How in the world do I connect to a skill?

My Lambda function has started working by itself. Maybe, it just needed time for everything to be properly set up.
