upgrading a pre-loaded app?

We have a custom ROM. Can we use the Amazon app store to upgrade our pre-loaded apps? If so, how? Right now the store won't allow the user to upgrade the pre-installed apps because they weren't originally installed though the store. They came pre-loaded in the ROM. The store message says: "On device but not installed by Amazon"

Hi, It is not possible to use the Amazon store to upgrade those apps, as they were not installed by the Amazon client. This ensures that users do not get unwanted updates from our appstore if the app happens to be available on our store as well as where it was originally installed from. -Nick

Surely you guys use the Amazon store to upgrade preloaded apps on the Kindle, right? Is there some magic I can apply to our preloaded apps to get the same functionality on our device?
