Can Application Key be made public?

I work on an open source app; it would be nice if the "Application Key" could be included in the source. Unfortunately, I have no idea if the "Application Key" is part of an important security mechanism (like the secret portion of an API key might be). Is there any risk in making this public?

Hello Phillip, Your Application Key would be considered a portion of your app's credentials for several of our APIs. As such, it would be highly suggestible not to include these keys with your app's source within a public facing repository.

Thanks, I was hoping it was more like a public key in a key pair.
