SVG linear gradients show up black

Hi all. New here. I am trying to produce a children's mobi book using Kindlegen. In the Kindle Reader my gradient fills on rects, ellipsis via linearGradients do not work. They just appear black. I have tried several examples including the w3c standard. Nothing works. The publishing guide PDF does not cover it. Has anyone had success with using this SVG tag linearGradient?
