So many people here are totally new to graphic design. I guarantee that if Merch allowed us to upload .ai or .psd files, there would be missing font errors. .ai is a PDF, really, and .psd is a TIF file I believe, but if people don't prepare those files correctly, the odds are that somewhere along the way, the fonts will get substituted from something nice to Courier or Tahoma. Forcing everyone to upload a PNG keeps all of those sorts of errors from happening on the Merch end of things... we see them as soon as they happen on our own computers.

Also, the people who upload very complex layered vector files will probably have printing errors but they'll never know it unless they order their own shirt, and even then it may not happen every time. I think the PNG solution is great.
