Using the ZigBee Radio Outside of the Smart Home API

I am working on creating a skill using the Smart Home API so I can utilize my ZigBee HA sensors with the Echo Plus. It appears to me that the Smart Home API does not currently support Home Automation device types. This brings me to the following questions:

1. Is it possible to use the Smart Home API with any ZigBee devices other than the on/off switches, door locks, or light controllers?

2. Is it possible to control the ZigBee radio built into the Echo Plus in a normal skill? Or is the Smart Home API the only option currently?
