Can't use 'alexa' as utterance?

I'm trying to use 'alexa' as an example utterance in a skill. Unfortunately, alexa seems to ignore this word as an utterance completely when it stands alone. In testing the input 'alexa' returns only the cryptic message "The remote endpoint could not be called, or the response it returned was invalid." Any fix for this?

After searching around more than four seconds on this forum it seems that using the devices wake word as an utterance is disallowed, for obvious reasons. Guess that's that.

This came up before. I think Amazon did something so you could use "Alexa" in an utterance but only for the AMAZON.US_FIRST_NAME slot.
