What kind of programmable devices are supported to work with smart home API

Is there a simple power socket that links with Alexa and can be controlled by it. I want to define my own devices, name them and control using Alexa (e.g. Kitchen light, Bedroom light etc).

Please let me demonstrate my ignorance here. If there is no smart home API involved, and some of the devices don't even use a hub, how does this work? What is the endpoint, and what communicates with the devices?

There isn't any way to communicate locally, so there isn't a good way to implement this via alexa.
