why do we have to give our bank account information in our application to join Amazon Merch?

Why do we have to provide our bank account numbers and routing numbers in our applications to join Merch? I am not comfortable with having had to do that, especially since there was a chance of being rejected. Bank account information should only be required when and only if an applicant is accepted.
