Based on implementations I've seen the mode of the thermostat isn't controllable from the Alexa App. I can set the temperature but I can't change between HEAT, COOL, or AUTO. I have to either use voice control or control the device directly. Is this correct or is there a way to enable control from the Alexa App?
Do I need to declare an additional display type? Or is this a design choice?
The controls available on the Alexa app are determined by the display category, so if it's not there after setting the appropriate device category and interfaces during discovery, it means it isn't available. You can check this documentation to see the available controls.
This could be an interesting feature request though - I recommend sending feedback directly through the Alexa app so that our team receives your ideas.
