I am testing the Metrics API at the moment and was wondering if there is a recommended way to access the data by month. Since the timerange of the requests to the API is limited to one week, you would have to send four separate requests and sum the results. This way works for enablements, sessions and utterances but it would not handle the unique customers properly.

No particular recommendations here - how you use and/or access the data depends on your use case, but as there is no monthly data there, that would be a limitation of the API right now.
It would be awesome to have the data for a whole month, as the number of unique users/customers cannot be added up week-wise to get the amount of unique users per month.
