How to create an Alexa compatible product?

I'm trying to use Alexa voice service to control a custom-made sort of cooking device but the device itself is not a "smart" device and is not inherently compatible with Alexa. How would I be able to code/change the device to make it compatible with Alexa and react with a Smart Home Skill? (How do the developers of smart products make their products compatible with Alexa)

The device you're creating would need to connect to your own endpoint over the web. You would then have to create a Smart Home skill in lambda and that would forward on requested commands to your own endpoint and then the device.
