Image Protection: Don't Use Watermarks, Use Model Mockup Views

If Amazon does not want to protect Merch images by using watermarks (due to potential sales suppression) ... then, they should consider using "in context" product views of real models wearing the shirts. This should be the ONLY product image available in the listing and its thumbnail preview (removing the flat, easy-to-steal images from the listing altogether). These images could be automatically applied to a mockup template by way of programmed displacement maps. [Do a Google Image search for "t-shirt mockup displacement map"]

Points to consider:

  • Watermarks are easy to remove in Photoshop.
  • Watermarks can potentially detract from sales.
  • Displacement Map Mockup views ENHANCE the product listing with a real-word view.
  • Displacement Maps create an almost IMPOSSIBLE to steal-and-reuse product image. An in-context "model view" is certainly useless as a source image. It includes representations of wrinkles, folds, shadows, perspective distortions, etc.
  • If using displacement maps is not an option, then using watermarks SHOULD be considered as a means of offering *some* degree of image theft protection.

I would agree as well mainly because of the case that model mockups have wrinkles, folds, etc which makes it very hard to obtain a stable image to rip from.

Although at some point I believe that clear mockups (like we have right now) attracts more attention as it gives a clear, unhindered view of the design to buyers but if this gets implemented in right way that the buyer can still see a good shot of the picture/design without any problems or crippled view, this can be a fantastic thing for sure.

I''d vote if I could but it's a +1 from me.

Yes, if you take a look at the designs on Zazzle's mockups, they are really hard to reproduce due to the images distortions. It would be a living hell for copycats.

Actually this really smart

I'm a long time clothing seller on eBay and Amazon and for items that I sell that are not on a person or at least a mannequin in the photo historically take longer to sell or I get the occasional customer emailing me "well what does it look like on a person"

Wrinkles and shadowing might be the end of a huge painful thorn in designers backs and Merch teams
