How to check the In-Development version of your skill in the Alexa App

While your Alexa skill is taking shape and seems to function well in the Alexa Simulator, you might want to check the visual and customer experience of it. One way to check out the skill’s in-development version before releasing it to the Skills Store is by testing it on a physical Alexa-enabled device or through the Alexa App (web, Android, and iOS).

There are various ways you can test your in-development and live skills to better understand the customer experience. It is important to note that to test a skill with an Alexa-enabled device (such as an Amazon Echo), your device must set up with same email associated with your developer account. The in-development version of the skill is only visible to developers if they login with the same email address under which they created the skill. This also includes all the account members who are added as developers or different roles under the developer account if they login with the registered email address in the Amazon Developer portal.

Once you enter the Alexa App, you need to find the in-development version of your skill. Here’s a quick way to find it:

When using the Alexa Web App:

  1. Login with your credentials at https://alexa.amazon.com (or .co.uk, .in , .de, etc. - as per the account marketplace).
  2. Go to the Skills tab in the left column.

3. In the upper right-hand corner, click on Your Skills.

4. Under the Dev Skills tab, you will be able to see your skill.

You will see all your in-development skills here under Dev Skills Tab. All of these in-development skills will have a common “devUS” green tag, and that tag does not change by locale.

When using the Alexa Mobile App:

  1. Login to the Alexa App with your developer credentials.

2. Go to the More option in the bottom right corner of the app.

3. Select the Skills & Games Tab.

4. Select Your Skills, and then go to the option Dev.

You can choose your in-development skill in any of the above versions of the Alexa App to get the visual experience and feel of the skill and add or modify customer facing details accordingly in the Developer Console.

If you already have a live skill and you are testing an in-development version of that same skill, you should ensure that the live version of the skill is disabled in order to make sure the correct skill version is tested.
